Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Canicross with Geordie CaniSports

What type of dogs can participate?
Canicross is suitable for all shapes and sizes of dogs! Whether you have a small terrier or a large working breed, there's a place for every dog in our community.
What equipment do I need for my dog?
You'll need a Canicross belt for yourself and a proper harness for your dog. Don't worry if you don't have these yet - we will fit a suitable harness for your dog at the introduction session.
What other equipment do I need?
We recommend trail shoes for better grip and stability. You'll also need a headtorch as we often run in the dark during winter months.
Do I need to be fit to start?
You need to be able to run 5km to start. We run at a variety of paces and nobody ever gets left behind.
How old does my dog need to be?
Dogs should be at least 12 months old before starting Canicross to ensure their joints are fully developed.
What about reactive dogs?
Yes, we welcome reactive dogs! We give all dogs space during our runs, but reactive dogs will need to wear a muzzle for the safety and comfort of all participants.
What happens at an introduction session?
Our free introduction sessions cover the fundamentals of Canicross, proper kit fitting for you and your dog, and give you a chance to meet our friendly volunteers. It's completely free with no obligation to join!
How do I find out about runs and events?
We use a private Facebook group to share information about our social runs and events. Introduction sessions will be posted on the Geordie CaniSports Community Facebook page for non-members to attend.
Do you run all year round?
We usually don't run sessions between June and August as it's too warm for the dogs during these summer months. We prioritise our dogs' welfare and safety above all else.
